Melanie Barwick, PhD, CPsych is a Senior Associate Scientist and Head of the Community Health Systems Resource Group in the Department of Psychiatry at SickKids. She is affiliated with the SickKids’ Learning and Research Institutes, and the Centre for Global Child Health, and is Scientific Director of Knowledge Translation for the Child Health Evaluative Sciences program. She is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. She chairs the Creative Professional Activity Committee for the U of Toronto Department of Psychiatry, and is a board member for the Children and Youth in Challenging Contexts (CCYC) Network Centre of Excellence and the Global Implementation Initiative (GII).
Dr. Barwick is an internationally recognized expert in implementation science and knowledge translation, and has a program of research that spans health, mental health, education, and global health sectors. Her research aims to improve the implementation of evidence into practice and to broaden the reach of evidence more generally to support decision making, policy, knowledge and awareness. She brings practical field experience in implementation, as lead for technical assistance for MCYS supporting outcome measurement for 120 CYMH provider organizations (2000-2015); and through evaluation of a CYMH emergency department protocol for the TC-LHIN (2015). She developed and provides professional development in knowledge translation internationally through the Scientist Knowledge Translation Training™ (for researchers) and the Knowledge Translation Professional Certificate™ (for KT practitioners) (http://tinyurl.com/p2p5du6); the latter has been recognized as a Leading Practice by Accreditation Canada. She consults to government and service providers in the child and youth mental health, health and education sectors, and extends her impact via a varied social media presence.
