Dallaire Digital Ambassador’s: Amplifying Efforts with Youth to Address Child Soldiery

The Romeo Dallaire Child Soldier’s Initiative (CSI) works to innovatively eradicate the use of child soldiers. As a recipient of Wisdom2Action’s Knowledge Mobilization Innovation Funding in 2013 (see full list of recipients here), the CSI launched Dallaire Digital Ambassadors (DDA) – a program that equips youth with the tools they need to have effective conversations about child soldiers over social media.

The CSI first recruited 300 DDAs through a new website (www.dda.childsoldiers.org). Then, they launched a series of campaigns that used microsites to talk about different issues related to child soldiers, like the different way children are used in war around the world. The content they shared was simple, meaningful, shareable and deeply relatable. It re-organized the CSI’s research into a format that was more accessible to youth and the online world. The corresponding spike in online engagement showed just how effective this repackaging was. The DDA has taught the CSI valuable lessons about how organizations can leverage the online world for meaningful conversations and change.
