Rock Solid Foundation: Youth Action Grants

Engaging Youth as Knowledge Brokers to Help Eliminate Bullying and Peer Victimization

(From the Rock Solid Foundation’s final report submitted to Wisdom2Action)

The Rock Solid Foundation (RSF), the charitable arm of the WITS Program, was established in 2001 in Victoria, BC in response to an alarming increase in youth violence. RSF’s WITS Program for elementary school children was created after a number of serious incidents made it clear that children needed to be taught non-violent, easy-to-remember strategies to use when confronted with peer aggression. Similar to Stop, Drop and Roll when on fire, the WITS strategies become automatic as the child grows into adulthood.

During the 2013-14 fall/winter period, the Rock Solid Foundation challenged schools and youth organizations across the country to organize and produce a youth-lead anti-bullying initiative with ‘knowledge mobilization’ as its impetus. Nine organizations rose to the challenge

Each organization had a different vision of how they wanted to address the issue of bullying from creating music videos to participating in a youth conference. Their financial needs varied as well; grants of $500 to $1000 were paid out to the nine groups.

As a result of this initiative, youth across the country have been encouraged to examine and express their feelings about peer victimization. They have risen to the challenge of creatively finding ways to pass on their knowledge of the effects of peer victimization as well as success strategies for dealing with it.
