W2A: Food Matters

A Conversation about Food in Nova Scotian Schools

Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, 2158 Gottingen Street

9:00am – 4:00pm Thursday, April 26, 2018

Supporting child and youth health is an important area of focus for chronic disease prevention. Good nutrition impacts children’s health, well-being and learning, and if children are not adequately nourished during childhood, the impact can last a lifetime. Canada ranks 37 out of 41 countries in providing access to nutritious food for children, and it is often left up to individual provinces to take action. Nova Scotia was one of the first provinces across Canada to do so, introducing a mandatory school food and nutrition policy in 2006.

Through research conducted at the Healthy Populations Institute, we have identified a number of challenges and opportunities for children and youth to eat well in schools across Nova Scotia. This W2A event will bring together key stakeholders and youth leaders to discuss these challenges and opportunities, working together to build upon over a decade of research and policy action to support a healthier future for our children and youth, collaboratively, through food.

This Wisdom2Action event is in partnership with the Healthy Populations Institute at Dalhousie University and is funded by CIHR and the Max Bell Foundation. W2A: Food Matters will bring together community service providers, researchers, educators, policy makers, youth and others who are involved in school food policy. The event will provide an opportunity to share promising practices to improve services related to the school food environment. Participants will have the opportunity to meet others doing similar work and develop networks to share best and promising innovations.

  • Learn about promising practices from across the province.
  • Problem solve collectively on challenges facing their work.
  • Form action plans to address these challenges.
  • Create ongoing networks with others from across the sector and across the region and country.

About Wisdom2Action Events

The Wisdom2Action event series was launched by Wisdom2Action (W2A) in December 2013.

The W2A model operates off of the principle that everyone in the room has important knowledge to share. We depart from traditional conference style formats, and have instead created a highly participatory design that allows all participants the opportunity to present their ideas or programs, direct the agenda for the day, and host conversations that are meaningful to them. Learn more about what you can expect at these events by downloading the W2A Brochure below.
