Kayla is a mental health advocate, especially with regards to the prevention of youth suicide. Kayla has worked with W2A as a Youth Advisor and supported national and international initiatives. In February 2018, Kayla co-facilitated the national Wisdom2Action Embrace Life forum held in Vancouver to focus attention on youth-led suicide prevention initiatives. In May 2018, she was invited to attend the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL) conference in Stockholm, Sweden where she collaborated with professionals from around the world to combat rising suicide rates, and how healthy recreation lifestyles can act as a protective factor in preventing suicide. As a result of this international experience, Kayla is now developing a mental health program for Scouts Canada for children as young as 4. She intends to run the program in groups across Nova Scotia with the hopes to bring it up to the national level of the organization.
In the spirit of reconciliation, Wisdom2Action acknowledges the land on which it was originally established as the traditional and unceded territory of the M’ikmaq, known as Mi’kmak’i (Nova Scotia). Our team is spread across Turtle Island (Canada) on the treaty lands of many First Nations. We recognize the people and the land in this way as part of our commitment to anti-oppression and decolonization. We are all treaty people.
